An introduction to off-grid system

What is the off-grid solar system?

An off-grid solar energy system is not connected to the utility grid, it means meeting all your energy needs from the power of the sun — with no help from the electrical grid.

A complete off-grid solar system has all the necessary equipment to generate, store, and supply solar energy onsite. As off-grid solar systems operate without a connection to any external power source, they are also referred to as “standalone solar power systems”.

Applications of the off-grid solar system:

1. Providing a charge to a portable phone or tablet charger

2. Powering the appliances in an RV

3. Generating electricity for small cabins

Powering small energy-efficient homes

What equipment does an off-grid solar system require?

1. Solar panels

2. Solar charge controller

3.Solar inverter(s)

4. Solar battery

5. Mounting and racking system

6. Wiring

7. Junction boxes

How to size an off-grid solar system

Deciding on the size of the system you need is an early and crucial step when it comes to installing an off-grid solar system.

It will affect the kind of equipment you need, how much work the installation will involve, and, of course, the total cost of the project. Solar setup sizes are based on the amount of power the system needs to provide.

There are two different ways to figure out the number you need, and they are based on:

Your current electric bill

Load evaluation

The advantages of off-grid solar:

1. Freedom from the grid

2. It’s good for the environment

3. Encourages a more energy-conscious lifestyle

4. Sometimes the only feasible option
