In 2022, the world’s new rooftop photovoltaic power generation will soar 50% to 118GW

According to the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (SolarPower Europe), the global new solar power generation capacity in 2022 will be 239 GW. Among them, the installed capacity of rooftop photovoltaics accounted for 49.5%, reaching the highest point in the past three years. Rooftop PV installations in Brazil, Italy, and Spain increased by 193%, 127%, and 105% respectively.

At this week’s Intersolar Europe in Munich, Germany, the European Photovoltaic Industry Association released the latest version of the “Global Market Outlook 2023-2027″.

According to the report, 239 GW of new solar power generation capacity will be added globally in 2022, equivalent to an average annual growth rate of 45%, reaching the highest level since 2016. This is another record year for the solar industry. China has once again become the main force, adding nearly 100 GW of power generation capacity in a single year, a growth rate as high as 72%. The United States is firmly in second place, although its installed capacity has fallen to 21.9 GW, a decrease of 6.9%. Then there are India (17.4 GW) and Brazil (10.9 GW). According to the association, Spain is becoming the largest PV market in Europe with 8.4 GW of installed capacity. These figures differ slightly from other research firms. For example, according to BloombergNEF, global photovoltaic installed capacity has reached 268 GW in 2022.

Overall, 26 countries and regions around the world will add more than 1 GW of new solar capacity in 2022, including China, the United States, India, Brazil, Spain, Germany, Japan, Poland, the Netherlands, Australia, South Korea, Italy, France, Taiwan, Chile, Denmark, Turkey, Greece, South Africa, Austria, United Kingdom, Mexico, Hungary, Pakistan, Israel, and Switzerland.

In 2022, global rooftop photovoltaics will surge by 50%, and installed capacity has increased from 79 GW in 2021 to 118 GW. Despite higher module prices in 2021 and 2022, utility-scale solar achieved a growth rate of 41%, reaching 121 GW of installed capacity.

European Photovoltaic Industry Association said: “Large-scale systems are still the main contributors to the total generation capacity. However, the share of total installed capacity of utility and rooftop solar has never been closer in the past three years, at 50.5% and 49.5% respectively.”

Among the top 20 solar markets, Australia, South Korea, and Japan saw their rooftop solar installations decline from the previous year by 2.3 GW, 1.1 GW, and 0.5 GW respectively; all other markets achieved Growth in rooftop PV installations.

The European Photovoltaic Industry Association said: “Brazil has the fastest growth rate, with 5.3 GW of new installed capacity, which is equivalent to an increase of up to 193% based on 2021. This is because operators hope to install before the introduction of new regulations in 2023.”, to enjoy the dividend of the net metering electricity price policy.”

Driven by the scale of residential PV installations, Italy’s rooftop PV market grew by 127%, while Spain’s growth rate was 105%, which was attributed to the increase in self-consumption projects in the country. Denmark, India, Austria, China, Greece, and South Africa all saw rooftop PV growth rates of more than 50%. In 2022, China leads the market with 51.1 GW of installed system capacity, which accounts for 54% of its total installed capacity.

According to the forecast of the European Photovoltaic Industry Association, the scale of rooftop photovoltaics is expected to increase by 35% in 2023, adding 159 GW. According to medium-term outlook forecasts, this figure may rise to 268 GW in 2024 and 268 GW in 2027. Compared to 2022, growth is expected to be more sustained and steady due to a return to low energy prices.

Globally, utility-scale PV installations are expected to reach 182 GW in 2023, a 51% increase compared to the previous year. The forecast for 2024 is 218 GW, which will further increase to 349 GW by 2027.

The European Photovoltaic Industry Association concluded: “The photovoltaic industry has a bright future. The global installed capacity will reach 341 to 402 GW in 2023. As the global photovoltaic scale develops to the terawatt level, by the end of this decade, the world will install 1 terawatt of solar energy per year. capacity, and by 2027 it will reach a scale of 800 GW per year.”
